As we go about our daily lives, there's an invisible threat lurking in the air around us that we can't afford to ignore: air pollution. Living in Delhi, we are no strangers to the hazy skies and the acrid smell that often fills our nostrils. But do we truly understand the impact that this pollution is having on our health and well-being?
This winter, my brother returned to India for vacation after his first semester of college abroad. To my surprise, he found himself struggling to catch his breath. Persistent cough plagued him day and night, and he even complained of uneasiness in his chest sometimes. According to the doctor, the drastic change in the quality of air he was breathing was the cause behind his woes. Hearing him constantly criticising Delhi’s poor air quality disappointed me, since this problem has been troubling our city for many years now.
Sadly, my brother’s experience is not unique. Many youngsters in Delhi are facing similar health challenges due to the alarming levels of air pollution in our city. From aggravated asthma to respiratory infections, the impact of breathing in toxic air is taking a toll on our well-being.
So, what can we do about it? Firstly, we need to educate ourselves and others about the sources of air pollution and its effects. By spreading awareness, we can encourage our peers and our communities to take action. Whether it's advocating for cleaner air policies or making small changes in our own lives to reduce our carbon footprint, every effort counts.
Also, we can also take steps to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of air pollution. Wearing masks when outdoors, keeping our living spaces well-ventilated, and staying informed about air quality levels are all simple yet effective ways to safeguard our health.
As students, we have the power to drive change. By coming together and raising our voices, we can push for a cleaner, healthier future for ourselves and the generations to come. Let's take a stand against air pollution and work towards a greener, more sustainable Delhi.
